It is amazing how much you can learn from a group of boys by seeing them playing. Last year it was the first time I worked at an Institution educating children from three to fifteen years old, and every Saturday I had to organize an activity according to their ages and about a particular topic. They were divided in five groups, and for each of them there were two leaders doing the different activities. The group I led was the eldest one.
At first, I felt truly scared because of their ages. It is said that working witht them is as difficult as keeping a two-year-old baby quiet. Besides, my workmate wasn't really the one who I had the best relationship with, what is more, I don't remember ever having talked to him before that (without mentioning that now he is one of my best friends).
However, it turned out to be a great year, not to say challenging most of all because we were able to discuss some topics we couldn't talk about with the other groups.
Now, going straight to the first Saturday, it was about a very delicate theme: the military coup of 1976. We decided to cover the walls of a small office with pictures of those years, little pieces of writing and we also played on some music related to it. Not only did we hung the pictures up, but we also drew on the floor a big unknown silhouette and their names were changed for 205 and 370.
It all went perfect, they learnt everything we intended them to, and they also seemed very interested and listened very carefully to everything we read and said.
Finally, all my fears vanished without trace and I was ready to enjoy the meetings. I ended up wishing everyday to be Saturday.
